A Tribute to Margaret Purcell

Margaret Gamble Purcell served on the Sierra Point Credit Union Supervisory Committee tirelessly for 24 years. We were fortunate to have her serve on the committee as chairperson of the committee for most of those years. Margaret lovingly referred to the employees of the credit union as “her kids”. When visiting relatives in Modesto, she would return with persimmons and apples and kindly shared and distributed the fruit herself from desk to desk. Margaret only passed the torch when she decided to move to Modesto to retire near family.

Margaret was born July 15, 1919 in Gilroy, California. She was a graduate of San Jose State University. She did her graduate work at USC. For her thesis in music, Margaret spent a summer in the hills of Tennessee writing down the words and music to songs the mountain people sang; songs that were only carried on from person to person.

Margaret taught choral music in San Leandro and evening classes at Healds Business School. She moved to South San Francisco and taught third grade at Buri Buri. When El Camino High School opened in 1961 she became a business teacher there. In 1962 she became Department Chair, a position she held until her retirement. Margaret retired in 1975 from the South San Francisco Unified School District and also served as District Business Coordinator for the SSF School District for many years.

During her time in the SSF School District, she developed a recruitment program where employers came to the two high schools, interviewed, and hired students. This was the model program in California.

After Margaret's retirement, she served as a State Business Educational Consultant.
Margaret was a member of the International Business Education Association and frequently traveled abroad to their meetings. She was an active participant when the Bay Area group hosted their annual meeting. She was also very active in the local AARP chapter.

Margaret loved to travel and had visited much of Asia, Europe, and South America.

She is interred at Oak Knoll Cemetery in San Jose.

Margaret is missed greatly by her friends and all her “kids” at Sierra Point Credit Union. In Margaret’s honor we will be naming our boardroom, “Margaret Purcell Board Room” in honor of her 24 years of loyal and dedicated service to our Credit Union.
